Funding and Independence Statement

Although frontier AI companies have expressed interest in funding our work, we do not accept direct funding from companies whose work we may evaluate, in order to maintain our independence as we conduct assessments and make recommendations.

We do accept donations from private individuals, including those whose wealth derives from AI companies. Also, employees of AI companies may attend our events and may be reimbursed by their employers for doing so.

We acknowledge that this policy presents potential conflicts of interest—for example, if we’re impelled to criticize a company where our supporters work. Despite these potential pressures, we are committed to stating our views with honesty and rigor to the best of our ability, based solely on evidence and our professional judgment.

We know this is easier said than done. We intend to remain cautious and clear-eyed and to seek advice on how to stay honest and true to our mission.
